Free EV Chargers: RAW Charging partnership

The SSDA is delighted to have RAW Charging as its exclusive EV charging partner, offering SSDA members zero-cost EV charger installation and exclusive preferential revenue share agreements.

If you are an SSDA member with a private car park of ten or more bays and do not currently have an existing EV charger partnership you can now apply to have EV charging installed at your business, entirely free of charge, with a guaranteed monthly revenue stream shared with you by RAW Charging.

We know that many businesses have had a difficult time installing chargers: the process can be long and complicated, there can be unforeseen costs, and a number of businesses have had their fingers burnt.  This is why we wanted to partner with one, trusted provider, to offer Members a simple, zero-cost solution for EV charger installation.   As a destination, it also simplifies things if lots of our businesses are using the same system: visitors will recognise, trust and specifically look for RAW ‘s Chargers and we will promote them on ‘Scotland Starts Here’.

This partnership is part of the SSDA’s commitment to Responsible Tourism.  The 2024/27 Action Plan for the Responsible Tourism Strategy sets out that, together, we will establish a South of Scotland EV charging network integral within the visitor economy, with charging stations at most accommodation and visitor attractions by 2027.  This our collective mission.

We therefore strongly recommend that members who own a private car park of ten or more bays and do not currently have an existing EV charger partnership, explore this exciting new opportunity to see if it’s right for them.

The SSDA has chosen to partner with RAW Charging as we see them as one of the biggest and most trusted names in the destination EV-charging sector.  They are the charging partner for some of the biggest names in UK hospitality, leisure and retail, such as: The National Trust, English Heritage, St Andrews Links Trust, Merlin Entertainments (Legoland, Thorpe Park, Alton Towers, Chessington World of Adventures, Warwick Castle) and McArthurGlen.  Read testimonials from these leading businesses here.  RAW Charging is also the exclusive EV charge partner of AA Hotels & Hospitality.

80% of new cars sold in Great Britain will be zero emission by 2030, increasing to 100% by 2035.  But this isn’t just about the future, it’s now.

Electric Vehicles are already becoming more and more prolific and, as a rural destination without a strong public EV charging network, it’s vital that businesses in the visitor economy can offer reliable EV charging if they want to attract these (often higher-spending) EV-driving visitors.

Having an EV charging solution not only makes your business more attractive to EV-drivers, it can: increase dwell time and spend, build customer loyalty, support sustainability, attract employees, futureproof your business and get you (literally) on the EV map!

Yes.  If RAW Charging decide that your business is eligible, there is zero cost to your business throughout the process.

No.  After you express interest by email there will be an initial eligibility check by email correspondence and then, if appropriate, an in-person site visit.

There are many factors that will be considered, including footfall, size and suitability of car park and the local power infrastructure.  If we find that many businesses want to take part but cannot due to the power network, we can make representation with SPEN, but any infrastructure upgrades will take time.

Our immediate priority is getting as many businesses which currently have the appropriate local power access to embrace the opportunity.

This is partly because of the footfall requirements for the EV charger to be a viable investment but also for the sake of the business: as with all public EV chargers, it would require exclusive EV use of that parking bay, so we suspect it is less attractive to businesses with fewer than ten parking bays.

No. RAW Charging cover the cost of electricity if a new connection is required. If energy is taking from your existing supply, RAW cover the cost of this by reimbursing you.

This is what RAW’s site visit will look at, considering various factors such as footfall, likely usage and the local power network, to decide whether AC or DC chargers would work best.

Part of this decision is also the nature of your business: for example, hotels sometimes prefer to have slower chargers as most users are charging overnight, so they don’t want to have to get up and move their car.

As part of the in-site assessment, RAW Charging will determine the revenue share rates.  This is done on a bespoke basis for each business as there are many variable; however, as an SSDA member you will receive an exclusive preferential rate, guaranteeing that you will get a larger payment than if you were not an SSDA member.   Revenue share agreements are agreed and fixed at the point you sign the contract with RAW Charging.

No.  Like all such companies, RAW Charging are only able to install chargers where they are the exclusive chargepoint provider in that car park/business.

Yes.  You need to own the car park and (as with all EV chargers) the agreed bays would be exclusively for EV users.

We recommend that members make clear there local charging facilities on their website, their ‘Scotland Starts Here’ listing and booking confirmation details but EV drivers will also use independent EV charger mapping apps, such as ‘Zap Map’ which will list your EV charger with live status information.  To encourage Members to use RAW Charging, we will offer specific additional promotion of members who sign up on ‘Scotland Starts Here’.

No.  RAW Charging will be responsible for all management and maintenance of the equipment.

RAW Charging will handle all necessary permissions and will manage the whole installation process for you.

Each site is different. As part of the site survey, RAW will determining the lease length requirements.

Based on the cost of energy, RAW set the driver price, which is carefully aligned to the industry rate for AC destination charging. This is subject to change, but RAW will provide ample notice should this occur.

The SSDA has entered into the exclusive partnership with RAW Charging because we have heard the issues some Members have had installing EV chargers; indeed, Members have specifically requested that the SSDA offers a one-stop recommended provider.  We chose RAW Charging because they are hugely trusted: they are the charge partner for the AA, The National Trust, English Heritage, Merlin Entertainment and many more.  The SSDA is also committed to delivering the Responsible Tourism Strategy target of having EV charging stations at most accommodation and visitor attractions by 2027.

We are delighted that, in addition to the preferential rates Members get on revenue share agreements with RAW Charging, the SSDA also receives a modest introducer fee.  We are keen to be transparent about this, while also emphasising that our primary motivation is for our Members rather than the SSDA.

It’s fantastic that we have a genuine win-win-win: Members get free EV chargers with guaranteed revenue; visitors get a quality, reliable EV charge infrastructure, and there is also an investment made in supporting businesses and developing the destination through the SSDA.

No, RAW’s chargers accept contactless debit/credit cards as a means of payment. They also accept roaming cards such as the popular Octopus Electrocard.

To get involved all you have to do is express an interest by emailing both RAW Charging (sales@rawcharging.com and David Hope-Jones (davidhj@ssdalliance.com), giving a little detail about the nature of your business and the proposed parking bays you potentially have available.
