The Scottish Borders Space Trail, also known as the Ancrum Astronomy Trail.
There are two integrated elements to the installation; models of all eight planets as well as a hemispheric model of the sun itself (around 12.5 meters in diameter). The planets will be situated at their correct scaled positions between Jedburgh and Peebles and will also be displayed at their correct scaled sizes (varying from a few centimetres to a metre and a half in diameter). These will be designed to be enduring and attractive, fit aesthetically into the local landscape and will have explicit reminders of our Scottish Heritage in terms of rural crafts and skills. The sun, situated at the beginning the trail near Jedburgh will be a SolarDome will serve both as an Educational Hub and a Visitor Centre.
Astronomer Royal of Scotland, Professor Catherine Heymans has given explicit approval of the project in which she envisages a unique educational benefit to a youthful population who are becoming increasingly interested in Astronomy, both as a recreational activity, and also as a taught subject. She has also offered access to educational materials and videos relating to the project through the Astronomical Institute at Edinburgh.
The South of Scotland Destination Alliance is supporting through advice and support for funding applications, including any data that may support such a bid.
