South of Scotland Enterprise and partners Scottish Borders Council, Dumfries & Galloway Council, VisitScotland, SSDA and Sustrans are exploring the development of a Coast-to-Coast Cycle Route, which will run from Portpatrick to Eyemouth.
Encouraging active travel
If developed this challenge route, suitable for experienced cyclists, will stimulate demand for recovery post Covid-19 and aligns with Scotland’s agenda to significantly reduce carbon emission and support health and wellbeing by encouraging active travel. The Coast to Coast project provides an excellent opportunity to cement the south of Scotland’s reputation as one of the outstanding road cycling destinations in the UK.
Study underway to assess demand
Work is underway to assess consumer demand, the economic impact and is also to explore the opportunities for ebike infrastructure along the route. Following this research phase of the project, if the case is made, further funding will need to be secured to deliver the route.
